Tonight I had dinner with a good friend and we talked about lots of things which made me smile.
Even though I am now a part of the corporate ladder climb and subsequent consumerism that comes with having a paycheck, I have not lost my head or my ideals that were shaped by watching plays with nuns in which they smoked pot on stage.
I told her about the “old boy’s club” mentality running rampant through my wing of the office and the quiet little mouse women in the corner cursing every word they hear under their breath. An older woman in my department had enough and called one guy out when he was talking about the “roles of women.” She said to him, “You have a young daughter, right? What if she wants to play soccer one day? Will you not let her because girls aren’t ’supposed’ to play sports like that?” The guy shut up for the rest of the day but it really doesn’t take much to get him and his friends going.
We also talked about the “Pittsburgh mentality” or whatever the hell it is that is keeping us from being like a big city, with young people that stay here and thrive here by working together. Now, I don’t want to get into name calling, but if you’re a successful Pittsburgh business catering to the new generation of tech-savvy folks and you don’t want to get involved with a really cool event that has brought in some amazing presenters and change makers, what the heck are you doing here? Do you think that drink tax is all you owe the city that gave you life, some amazing sports teams, and a good strong work ethic? Unbelievable. Yeah, yeah, it’s a dead issue, ok, but I’m still in disbelief.
Come together.
Another thing that I posted about before was the lack of support one local radio dj gave to the AE New American Music Union. He said it probably won’t go over too well because Pittsburgh is a town of country fans and Nickelback fans. He basically pointed to the fact that Pittsburgh is behind the times and wouldn’t welcome artists like the Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley at the same music festival, that we aren’t that diverse, accepting, open to new ideas. But guess what Grimmy Grimm, IT SOLD OUT.
Sure the town has some issues with getting things done, *cough* casino *cough* but we’ve got spirit. Quit knocking it!
We also chatted about blogs and what we’re reading. Lately I’ve been reading about JaG’s breakup, Danielle’s wedding plans, wondering what happened to Suzie, and found out that I am embedded into Tony’s sidebar on his facebook widget. Corinna finally got to play golf, and someone is paying $4000 to hang out with MG and listen to some demos.
Last night, the Yinz Team celebrated teh coach’s birthday in style, with shots of Maker’s Mark. TOW-J dropped bruschetta in his New Castle Ale. After consulting Spoon, he drank that.
